UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD OXFORD CENTRE FOR INTEGRATIVE SYSTEMS BIOLOGY & DEPARTMENTS OF BIOCHEMISTRY, PHYSICS AND WEATHERALL INSTITUTE FOR MOLECULAR MEDICINE

Post-Doctoral Researcher - Modelling the origins & implications of global gene expression variation between cells

We are seeking to appoint a Post-Doctoral Researcher to investigate extrinsic noise in gene expression in mammalian cells and examine couplings to the cell cycle. The project aims to investigate the origins of the pronounced, global, variability observed between different cells in clonal populations and how variability might impact on other processes in both cell and organism. The PDRA will work with experimental data from the lab of Dr Francisco Iborra (Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine) and will develop theoretical treatments with Prof Bela Novak (Biochemistry) and Dr Nick Jones (Physics). The researcher will have a desk in the Jones lab but will have a principal base in the group of Prof Novak. This topic is approached by researchers in many fields so applications from across the disciplines will be considered. The appointment is of 2 years duration and would, desirably, start soon after a candidate is selected (though some flexibility is possible). Informal enquiries to sysbio-enquiries@bioch.ox.ac.uk

Applicants should possess a PhD or equivalent (or be about to receive one) and should have the following necessary and desirable experience:-

Essential:
A good level of familiarity with master equations, generating functions, SDEs and ODEs; a high level of programming skills; enthusiasm to work with real biological data and to work with researchers from different backgrounds; experience modelling real systems from data, preferably in Biology and a strong, relevant, publication record and an ability to work independently if required
Desirable: Experience dealing with the parameters of large systems of equations; biological modelling especially of gene expression noise and familiarity with methods to simulate stochastic chemical processes.

The post is funded by BBSRC & EPSRC for 2 years (in the first instance) and is graded on the University's grade 7 scale, for which the salary range is £28,839 - £35,469 per annum. The actual starting salary offered will be based on qualifications and relevant skills acquired and will also be determined by the funding available.

For further general information, an application cover sheet and other application requirements please visit the Departmental website http://www.bioch.ox.ac.uk/jobs/instructions.html or phone (01865) 613204, quoting the reference number below

Applications, including 3 copies of the completed application cover sheet and recruitment monitoring form, three copies of a detailed CV, the names and addresses of two referees, (one of whom must be the current or most recent employer), and three copies of a letter setting out, with examples, how you meet the selection criteria for the post, should be sent to:
The Deputy Administrator
Department of Biochemistry
